Upriver Wellness — FAQ
Getting started
How do I know if therapy is right for me right now?
If you're feeling stuck in patterns you don't fully understand, noticing your past affecting your present, or simply wanting more from your relationships and inner life — those are all valid reasons to try therapy. You don't need to be in crisis. A consultation call is a low-stakes way to see if it feels right.
What happens during a free consultation?
It's a 15-minute conversation — not a clinical intake, just a chance to connect. You'll share a bit about what brings you to therapy, I'll tell you about how I work, and we'll see whether there seems to be a good fit. There's no obligation, and no wrong answer.
What should I expect in the first few sessions?
The first 2–3 sessions are about getting to know each other and understanding your history and what you're hoping for. We don't rush into deep processing. Building safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship comes first — that's not incidental to the work, it is the work.
Insurance & fees
Do you accept insurance?
Yes — I am in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Providence, and United Healthcare. If you have one of these plans, sessions may be covered at your standard in-network rate, subject to your deductible and copay. I'd recommend calling the member services number on your card to understand your specific mental health benefits before we meet.

If your plan isn't listed, you may still be able to use out-of-network benefits — I can provide a superbill for reimbursement. See the Fees & Insurance page for full details.
What is your fee?
My full session fee varies by service type. Reduced-rate spaces may be available on a limited basis — please ask during our consultation if that's a consideration for you. See the Fees & Insurance page for full details.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt with the clinical codes your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement claim. I provide these upon request for clients whose plans are not listed above. Whether you'll be reimbursed and how much depends on your specific plan and out-of-network deductible.
How it works
Do you offer in-person sessions?
Yes — I offer in-person sessions in Portland, OR (801 NE Alberta St) and Camas, WA. Video sessions are also available for clients throughout Oregon and Washington.
How long does therapy typically take?
It varies widely. Some people come with a specific focus and are done in 3–6 months. Others working through complex or developmental trauma find that longer-term work, over a year or more, is where meaningful change happens. We set goals together and check in regularly about how the work is going.
What's the difference between EMDR and regular talk therapy?
Talk therapy often works by building insight — understanding why you feel or respond certain ways. EMDR works by directly processing the memories and experiences that are stored in a raw, unintegrated state. Many people who've done significant insight work find EMDR reaches something that talking about it hasn't. Both can be part of our work together.
